  • 9:30am - 4pm: On Familiar Ground: An exhibition of paintings by prominent alumni Tom and Peggy Root Lyme Academy College

    Chauncey Stillman Gallery. Free admission.

Living and working in the Appalachian foothills of northeastern Tennessee, Peggy Root’s work is a celebration of the peace and beauty found in nature. Her compositions are painted outdoors, paying careful attention to light conditions and seasons. Because of constantly changing light conditions, she is able to work on each canvas for no more than two hours at a sitting, returning to the site at the same time on successive days to develop the painting. Peggy studied figure painting and anatomy at Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and has spent the last 30 years painting the landscape of the Eastern United States.

A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Tom Root has been a professional figure and portrait painter for over 35 years. He studied drawing and painting at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts under Aaron Shikler and Deane G. Keller. Early on, Tom was interested in being a part of a contemporary figurative revival. He loved historic portraiture but intensely disliked modern formula-based commercial portraiture and desired to see contemporary portraiture reconnected with fine art. This has been the goal of much of his work. In addition to being a painter, Tom is also a songwriter, musician and a writer of children’s stories.

Both artists exhibit nationally in invitational and museum shows. Their work is also featured in private and corporate collections throughout the country. This summer Peggy and Tom Root will be teaching residencies in landscape painting and figure painting respectively at Lyme Academy College (August 8-12).

Linda Ahnert, a Florence Griswold Museum docent since 2002, will be on hand to share anecdotes about the artists who lived and played and worked in Old Lyme. Many of their favorite places have been memorialized in oils and are on display in the Town.

In 1974, the Town of Old Lyme appropriated $1,840 for 1976 Bicentennial event planning. The Bicenntenial Commission sponsored a number of activities, including concerts and barbeques; produced a play about Old Lyme’s history, “Echoes Down the Valley,” written by Charlotte Griswold; published several history books; and sponsored the restoration of paintings given or loaned to the Town over the years. Today, the Art Collection at the Memorial Town Hall includes paintings by many of the artists who summered at the Florence Griswold House and became known as the Lyme Art Colony: Harry L. Hoffman, Carleton Wiggins, Wilson Henry Irvine, William Chadwick, William S. Robinson, and Will Howe Foote, among them.
